“Dog-gone!”

One of the tricks I’ll recommend to students who feel stuck on a jam comic exercise is to just draw something; once they’ve got an image (or a phrase, if they tackle it from the “word-first” angle) it’ll become clearer where they can take the story. Which is kinda the approach I took myself on this jam comic with the me from 20 years ago! (As tempted as I was to redraw 2004 Dale’s awkwardly drawn Emma hands, I resisted!)

“Let’s go to a comic con!”

It’s almost here– the inaugural Memphis Libraries Comic Con! I’ve heard good things about other comic events hosted by libraries, and I’m looking forward to being at a comic show that caters to readers! I’m bringing a selection of my Watusi (and other) digests, minicomics, and my full-size comics. It will be a pretty comic-centric selection of merchandise (no prints or original art), but it gives a pretty good sense of the art I make. The convention should be a good time, with two dozen artists, over a dozen dealers, and panels with featured guests Mike Norton and John Ostrander! Admission is FREE, so there’s no reason not to get a taste of the locally-created comic scene …  and the library is even giving free graphic novels to the first 200 attendees, so be sure to make it one of your Free Comic Book Day stops! Hope to see you there!

[While this post originally appeared on my blog at smearysoapboxpress.com, since it’s also a Watusi comic, I figured I should share it here, too…]

“Splash pad splashdown!”

All you need to know: readers wanted to see Watusi splash around in the water with the neighborhood kids!

You can read the rest of this episode of my current interactive* Watusi comic, exclusive for my newsletter subscribers, in my May newsletter (and subscribe to it, if so inclined) …

(* it’s not called “Give the people what they want” for nothing– readers get to vote on the direction the story goes next!)

“Brave new world”

Oh, probably a thing or two…

While this is certainly a more topical ending than I’ll use in any eventual “Watusi in Oz” book collection, it’s one that feels kind of right for the world we have as I finish this storyline up at long, long last. A big thank you goes out to those of you who stuck around for this epic comic adventure that lived up to its “epic” description! Feel free to share your thoughts below, or email me if you don’t want it to be for public consumption…

So, you may ask, what’s next for Watusi & company? What’s next for me? Well, as I wrote back in January, I’m stepping off of this weekly deadline merry-go-round to work more deeply on projects other than this online comic. Of course, since I’m likely to go into Watusi withdrawal, rest assured there will be more canine capers coming in the future! You can find out about those– and whatever else is coming next– in my monthly newsletter; if you haven’t already done so, you can subscribe here

As always, thanks for reading!
