I’m not sure how semantically accurate Watusi’s dog logic is here … but it did the trick, I guess!

I’m not sure how semantically accurate Watusi’s dog logic is here … but it did the trick, I guess!

I’ve been playing around with my talking dog of the future character lately, working on a t-shirt design and a solo comic … neither of which are complete, but should be before next year. After all, if the year 2525 is good enough for a song, it should be good enough for a new talking dog of the future comic, right?

… in case you were wondering, this isn’t some sort of commentary on so-called “fake news”, but rather a shameless plug for this Saturday’s annual Free Comic Book Day event! FCBD is a promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to attract new readers to independent comic book stores; you can find a participating store near you here. Here’s the list of freebies you’re likely to find up for grabs.
While I won’t be sketching at a store this year, lots of artists will be, including…
Hope you find some new comics to enjoy!

It’s true, kids– I started making Watusi comics so far in the distant past… that televisions actually looked like that!

At one point I was planning to do more Li’l Watusi starter panels, but this is the only one I made. It’s not the only Li’l Watusi story I have in mind, though…
It should go without saying, but just in case: DON’T DRINK ANTIFREEZE!

Today’s episode is another collaboration with the Dale of almost exactly 20 years ago; this starter panel was drawn on March 4th, 2004!

This episode’s starter panel was one of the earliest I drew– just the third one, in fact! Not to toot my own horn, but I think I’ve gotten a little better at drawing him since then…

One of the tricks I’ll recommend to students who feel stuck on a jam comic exercise is to just draw something; once they’ve got an image (or a phrase, if they tackle it from the “word-first” angle) it’ll become clearer where they can take the story. Which is kinda the approach I took myself on this jam comic with the me from 20 years ago! (As tempted as I was to redraw 2004 Dale’s awkwardly drawn Emma hands, I resisted!)

I’ve been writing a fair amount lately, reminding myself how I used to pace Watusi’s ongoing adventures. It’s pretty much coming back to me, which bodes well for things to come over the next few months! Stick around…

While I’m still enjoying these done-in-one collaborations with the early years of Watusi comics, I’m planning to shake things up a bit in the new year. And this one my have even inspired the direction to go in, too…
Hope you’re having a festive holiday season! Cheers to a happy 2024!
