I’ve been playing around with my talking dog of the future character lately, working on a t-shirt design and a solo comic … neither of which are complete, but should be before next year. After all, if the year 2525 is good enough for a song, it should be good enough for a new talking dog of the future comic, right?

… in case you were wondering, this isn’t some sort of commentary on so-called “fake news”, but rather a shameless plug for this Saturday’s annual Free Comic Book Day event! FCBD is a promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to attract new readers to independent comic book stores; you can find a participating store near you here. Here’s the list of freebies you’re likely to find up for grabs.

One of the tricks I’ll recommend to students who feel stuck on a jam comic exercise is to just draw something; once they’ve got an image (or a phrase, if they tackle it from the “word-first” angle) it’ll become clearer where they can take the story. Which is kinda the approach I took myself on this jam comic with the me from 20 years ago! (As tempted as I was to redraw 2004 Dale’s awkwardly drawn Emma hands, I resisted!)
